What is a Gallbladder stone?

Gallbladder stones are formed when a little bit of sediment or solid material becomes attached to the inside of one of your bile ducts. As this small solid piece continues to grow, it causes an obstruction. Because there is no place for the bile to go, it begins to build up in the gallbladder.

As these stones pass through the digestive tract, they may be removed by the body’s natural processes but in some cases they become lodged in the liver, gallbladder or other parts of the biliary system and cause blockage and inflammation.

This blockage prevents the bile from being excreted and causes it to back up into the cystic duct, which connects the gallbladder to the liver. The accumulation of bile and subsequent inflammation caused by gallstones can lead to a very painful condition called Cholecystitis.

Procedure of the Surgery

During this surgery, in the abdomen (abdominal wall). The surgeon then uses a telescope (endoscope) to look inside the abdominal cavity and locate the gallbladder. Next, a small incision is made in the skin to allow the surgeon to insert a laparoscopic instrument through this opening into the abdominal cavity. This instrument has a pair of tiny suction tubes at the end of it. The surgeon places one tube inside the gallbladder and the other tube outside the abdominal cavity.

The Surgeon will then use special grasping forceps to remove the stones one by one and drain any fluid that may be present and put a tube in your belly to keep you from getting fluid in your abdomen. After removing all the Gallstones, the surgeon will close up the small incision using stitches.
This surgery takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete and is done under general anesthesia.
