What is a Gallbladder stone?
Gallbladder stones are formed when a little bit of sediment or solid material becomes attached to the inside of one of your bile ducts. As this small solid piece continues to grow, it causes an obstruction. Because there is no place for the bile to go, it begins to build up in the gallbladder.
As these stones pass through the digestive tract, they may be removed by the body’s natural processes but in some cases they become lodged in the liver, gallbladder or other parts of the biliary system and cause blockage and inflammation.
This blockage prevents the bile from being excreted and causes it to back up into the cystic duct, which connects the gallbladder to the liver. The accumulation of bile and subsequent inflammation caused by gallstones can lead to a very painful condition called Cholecystitis.
